Ellen Kent's Spring opera tour visits De Montfort Hall on March 13th with a brand new production of La Boheme...

La Boheme features a few surprises alongside stunning sets and glorious music. Sung in Italian with English subtitles and based on Henri Murger's novel 'Scenes de la vie de boheme', La Boheme focuses on the love between seamstress Mimi and poet Rodolfo. After falling in love instantly, Rodolfo leaves Mimi due to her flirtatious behaviour, although wracked by guilt as their life together probably worsened Mimi's delicate constitution. In true tragic opera fashion, the pair reunite briefly before Mimi dies.

International sopranos Elena Dee and Maria Tsonina alternate the leading role of Mimi, while 'ladies favourite' Andriy Perfilov plays Rodolfo. They are joined by a 70-strong company including tenor Ruslan Zinevych, who has sung with Pavarotti and performed Ellen's operas at the Royal Albert Hall in London. New conductor Gheorghe Stanciu, artistic director of the Constanta Opera in Romania, has joined the tour, bringing a new focus to the music, provided by the esteemed Kharkiv Theatre Orchestra.

After a two-year break to concentrate on other projects, Ellen's comeback tour has proved a triumph, prompting packed theatres. The award-winning director and producer said: "It's so rewarding to hear how much enjoyment people get from my operas. It's good to know I haven't lost my touch!" It's making opera accessible and encouraging people who have never heard it before to feel the emotion and drama that inspires Ellen to keep going.

She explains: "I don't do much symbolism, I do opera that people actually want to see, that people can identify with and cry and feel moved. I aim to make opera understandable and enjoyable, almost like upmarket musicals. People don't want to be educated, they want to be entertained and have a great night out."
